chicago film family & newborn photographers | city of angels.

Filed in: family, film, newborn

There are all sorts of movies and books that depict angels, ghosts and other outer-worldly beings that invisibly remain among us. If that were true, what do you think they would be doing all day long? I think my favorite theory of this is the movie, City of Angels with Nicholas Cage and Meg Ryan in which there are angels dressed in trench coats that watch the sun rise every day, sit on top of sky scrapers and even roam around the library secretly watching people in ‘the real world.’  Perhaps if you ever were lucky enough to meet one of those angels, one of their stories would go a little something like this..

Once I happened upon a house where a little boy was peering out the window..

“Caleb! Come up here and see your baby brother!”

A soft voice called out to the boy and I looked up to find his mother sitting on the bed, cradling a tiny baby in her arms.

I chuckled to myself at the look of wonder on the baby’s face..

oh how wonderful it must be to feel so much awe and joy about everything.

The little boy began to climb onto the bed and suddenly I heard what sounded like an elephant charging toward me from behind.

Woah!

I instinctively ducked out of the way as another little boy leaped over me and onto the bed, crashing into his brother.  The sounds of children laughing and giggling filled the room..

ah, I could never tire of that sound.

I stumbled backward against the wall, and then looked to my left as the boys’ father entered the room and scooped the baby out of the mother’s arms.

“Boys!” the mother laughed, “No jumping on the bed.  Remember we must be extra gentle when your baby brother is around.”  She leaned over and gently tickled their sides before tugging on their pants and pulling them toward her.

“Can you believe we made these little monkies?” The mother said as she looked up at her husband with a huge grin on her face.  She reached out her arms as if to signal she was ready to hold the baby again, and the man smiled back and obliged her.

The woman sat back and instructed the boys to sit still so they could hold their new brother.

“It’s really important that we sit still and listen to mommy okay? We have to be extra gentle with Hudson and make sure we keep him safe.” She laid the baby over the boys’ laps and they sat there, puzzled over what to do next.

One of the little boys reached out when suddenly the baby’s lips quivered and in an instant he began to cry out.

“It’s okay, he just needs you to be gentle and make him smile.” The mother encouraged her boys.

I was curious to know more about this family so I sat down in an empty chair against the wall and quietly watched as they passed the baby back and forth between the parents and the two little boys.  They kissed, and hugged and played and laughed with each other – of all the places and great things I’d seen on this Earth, these were some of my favorite moments to watch.

When they were done playing, the mother stood up and said to the man, “I love you,” she leaned over and kissed him. “I’m going to feed Hudson and then maybe we can all watch that movie together?”

“Of course.”  He smiled. The man stood up also and started waving his arms in the air and motioning the boys to come toward him, ” Okay, okay time to go downstairs!”

“Noooooooooooooooooooooo!” They protested as they laughed and hopped off the bed, charging around the corner and down the stairs.

The woman got up and also left the room, so I decided to follow her.  We walked down the hallway together and she led us through a door and into a bright room, where she sat down on a tiny bed, lifted up her shirt and began to nurse the baby.

The mother continued to nurse the baby until he soon fell fast asleep – I’m sure to dream lands of soft clouds to lounge on and rivers of milk to drink from.
