Hi, I'm Suzy, a photographer, mentor and mom of 3. I'm so glad you're here.

I should start off this post by clarifying a few things for those of you who are just coming to my blog.. I am currently located in Chicago but am available for travel, and for this session in particular I went to Washington DC..

Speaking of travel, I’ve been doing a lot of that this past month and really pushing myself in terms of what I’m able to fit in between. Ah the joys of being self-employed.. always having to dive right in and then take a step back to look at what you’re doing (aka, realize how much you are fudging up everything), figure out what’s working and not working and come up with a new plan – rinse, wash, repeat. Though despite the new challenges that come with more travel sessions, I’m excited to think about all of the new families and places I’ve been visiting and plan on going to this year – including DC.  I’ll even be going again some time around October for possibly up to a month, so if you’re in the DC or Virginia area and interested in a family or baby photography session, definitely reach out info@simplybysuzy.com.

Speaking of DC, last month I flew out there to spend a couple of days with this family documenting their life now that baby #3 is here, Quinn – a boy!  I’ve known this family since their oldest was just 3 months old and they were living in Chicago. I am so grateful they haven’t gotten sick of me yet and still continue to fly me out to them now that they’ve moved across the country.. last minute, in ice storms and polar vortexes no less.. I mean, I should be more specific in that the morning of the actual session I was so thrilled to look out the window to find a bright, sunny sky and then once dad got home from work and we got to the session itself, literally right as we were walking upstairs the clouds started to cover that beautiful sun and then the ice storm hit.  But what can ya’ do, travel sessions don’t really offer the luxury of rescheduling so we all crouched on the bed close to the window and made it work. And gosh darnit did we make it work – I honestly love this session so much and the rich colors that somehow magically happen when there is no light. So we laughed and played (and cried just a little bit) and laughed and played some more, and then we finished up the day with grandma’s seven-generation pasta recipe for dinner. YUM. Made me reminisce back to the delicious tiramisu iced tea she made for me years ago the first time I met her at a newborn session I did for Heather’s sister, Mia, when her first baby was born (so Heather is Quinn’s mama, and I met her through her sister, Mia, who I randomly met at the Lincoln Perk in Chicago – confused yet?).

And so, with all of that said, here are some highlights of that hour together in the gloomy dark ice storm.. and here’s to hoping that some warmer, brighter weather is right around the corner for us Midwest and East coast folks..

XOXO

Behind the Camera

My name is Suzy and for the last 18 years I've had the absolute honor and privilege of photographing families during their life's greatest moments in Chicago and all around the world (and I have the smile lines to prove it). I absolutely love photography, and I am extremely good at what I do. But my absolute best and most important work is being able to help people connect with their families. So they can see and appreciate of all of things that are so wonderful about their life.
