Hi, I'm Suzy, a photographer, mentor and mom of 3. I'm so glad you're here.

This family and I have spent a lot of time together the last month – no literally, I’ve been to their house about 4 times to visit them 🙂  First I stopped by about a month ago to say hello before their little guy was even here, and then a couple weeks later baby William arrived and we made time for me to come by and have their session.. which turned into me returning three more times.  I love the fact that Chicago’s diverse weather patterns and vastly different architecture and parks provides me with a abundance of places to shoot at; however, the downside is that unpredictable weather and beautifully unique homes sometimes only leave me with an hour or two of good light during the day.  Thankfully William’s mom & dad were sweet enough to let me come back a couple of times to make sure we caught only moments of that sweet sweet light I’m always looking for.. and after going through all of the images we took from our time together, I’d say it definitely paid off 🙂

The fourth and final time I visited them we all hung out as a family at home, taking some time for the normal newborn routine of feedings, burping, changings, soothing.. not only was it a beyond pleasure hanging out with these three but I LOVED their house and all of the little details of their life displayed within it.. from the old B&W family heirloom pictures to the heart-shaped lock on their big red front door.. the roses growing in their backyard and William’s adorable nursery.  It reminded me of a quaint home somewhere out of Europe, which always brings back nostalgic memories of Ireland or Vasili’s YaYa’s home in Greece.  When we were done lounging at home we walked down the street to a nearby park to finish up, and even grandma met up with us too!

Anyway, here are some favorites from my the few days I spent getting to know this fun, loving family 🙂  Thank you SO so much again William and to your mom & dad for not only allowing me the pleasure of getting to know you three better but also for inviting me out to capture your most special moments.  Until next time.. XO

above: love love loved mom’s gorgeous red locks (and officially jealous as I’ve often tried and failed at many attempts to fake it with a box of clairol..)

above: LOVE this shot! What really makes it for me is the way William curled his toes at his mama’s touch *sigh* so sweet.

above: ha the look on William’s face cracks me up every time!

above: how ADORABLE is that nursery?! Kudos to mom for your great hair AND your great sense of interior design.

above right: funny I don’t remember William giving a peace sign, but I do remember mom saying “Peace!” from behind the camera.  I dig!

above: relaxed in dad’s arms 🙂 such a classic shot that I never get tired of.

above: the first time I walked up to their house I saw the heart shaped lock on their gorgeous red door and knew they were going to be a great family 🙂

above: This is a shot I’ve had requested in the past, and never have been able to successfully pull it off (do you know how hard it is to keep a baby from slipping back in those smooth mod chairs?!).  Putting it in the shade under a veil of ferns was dad’s brilliant idea. How cool are those shadows?!

above: Again, dad’s ideas made this image really come to life.  I loved that I’d come up with a concept to shoot and then mom & dad would make a suggestion that made it even more amazing than something them or I might have come up with on our own.  I love this kind of interactive chemistry at my sessions!

The Artist

Suzzane
brown

For nearly two decades, I’ve worked with individuals and families who understand the value of time. And the importance of preserving it well.

My work centers on creating living archives: carefully composed records of a life as it’s being lived. Not performances. Not surface moments. But the relationships, environments, and details that define a legacy.

I approach each commission with the eye of an artist and the discipline of a documentarian. Listening closely. Observing deeply. Shaping work that is meant to endure. Crafted on film, finished as heirloom objects, and designed to be held in your hands, lived with in the home, and passed down in your private family vault.

This is not photography for the present moment.

It is art made in service of memory, history, and the generations that follow.
